It’s important to check that
your school needs a bike shed and has the space for a bike shed
before entering this competition. We recommend talking to your
teacher or a member of the school community so you know if your
school is able to house a bike shed. If there isn’t existing
space, there may be an area in your school ground that could
be converted for the bike shed.
A location that is close to the preferred car-free entry point
is important as it will prevent students riding across school
grounds. The ideal scenario is to have a dedicated gate for
Bicycle Only access. In some school settings, the need for passive
surveillance of the bike shed is an issue, as theft even from
a secure bike shed is always possible. A location overlooked
by classrooms or the school office is ideal.
The Rosebank Bike Shed will accommodate
50 standard bikes. It will have a concrete floor, wire mesh
fence, bike rails and a fully fitted gate. State Bicycle Bodies recommend that schools provide secure,
sheltered bike parking for 10% of their students.
The schools awarded the Rosebank Bike Sheds will be provided
with a certified builder and will be offered assistance in obtaining
any permits that may be required. The building of the bike shed
will commence in February 2009 and must be completed by March
1st 2009. The winning schools must comply with Rosebank’s
requirements as part of acceptance of the major prize.
Schools must be willing to participate in media activity when
the bike shed is complete and unveiled in early March 2009.
